It is not easy to work offshore with no fixed schedule. There is hardly work - life balance. But Schlumberger has the best training for their employee and career ladder is clear and timed.

Challenging and interesting work

One can learn many things in the oil and gas industry. The job is suitable for those who like ever-changing environment. It ranges from extreme to another. One day you can feel relax, and the next you have to work all-night for an urgent call out from clients. Work-life balance is the hardest part of this job. On the other hand, you can enjoy a long day-off with your family after you finish your tour.

Pros

Well paid

Cons

Long hours

Hard work, and great experience

Training to be a field engineer is like drinking from a fire-hose. The field engineer is responsible for all aspects of the job- logistics, certifications, technology deployment, troubleshooting, client invoicing, crew management. As a young engineer, its a rare opportunity to take control of a $250,000++/ day oil rig and perform the job. The compensation and benefits are very generous, as is severance package. Vacation (when you can get it) is long. The largest drawback is the total forfeiture of personal time. Being on call 24 hrs/ day, 7 days per week is a requirement. Also, the job conditions can be very challenging in terms of fatigue management, and health and safety in general. Not all locations have the same safety standards or cultural norms.

Pros

Compensation, vacation schedule

Cons

Work/life balance, working conditions
